Three CRPF men killed in Maoist attack in Orissa

Malkangiri, (Orissa): At least three Central Reserve Police Force men, including an officer, were killed as the Maoists triggered a blast in Kalimela area of this backward district of Odisha on Friday.

The incident occurred near MV-66 village early in the morning when the CRPF men were on their way from Kalimela to Gamphagunda in a mini truck.

The Left wing extremists triggered the blast when the vehicle was crossing a culvert.

The culvert as well as the vehicle were badly damaged in the blast.

Although the CRPF men were going in a convoy, only one vehicle was damaged in the mine blast.

The CRPF officer who was killed in the incident was identified as Bhupinder Singh, a Deputy Commandant, Superintendent of Police Satyabrata Bhoi said.

In Bhubaneswar, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik termed the incident `tragic’.

The incident comes close on the heels of the Maoist strike in Rayagada district of the state, and ahead of the anti-Maoist operation that the state government was planning to launch shortly with the active support of Central forces.

Four villagers, including a Special Police Officer, were gunned down by armed Maoists in Rayagada district on Thursday night.

Orissa to seek joint anti-Maoist operation

Bhubaneswar: With unabated Maoist attacks claiming seven lives, including three CRPF jawans, in a span of three days, the Orissa government today decided to seek a joint anti-Naxal operation soon in consultation with the Centre.

“Union Home Secretary G K Pillai is coming here on November 20. We will take up the matter with him and seek an early special operation against Maoists,” Chief Secretary T K Mishra said after a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

While Maoists killed four persons in Rayagada district on November 11, they eliminated three CRPF jawans today by triggering a landmine blast in Malkangiri district.

Describing the incident as “tragic”, Patnaik said the state police had already launched combing operation to apprehend those involved in the incident.

Forest official filed case against the hindu priest in Orissa

Forest official filed case against the priest of the muth for illegally possessing a rare turtle at the muth premises

Forest officials of Bhitarkanika National Park filed a case on Thursday against Priest of the Batu Baba Muth, Ram Chandra Das ,on the charges of illegally possessing  an endangered fresh water Indian Soft Shell turtle at Batu Baba muth and worshipped it as they believe the turtle has some Celestial   marks on its carapaces which resembles like the eye of Lord Jagannath, said Mihir Patnaik, the Ranger of Mahakalapada.

The religious sentiments of the Khadipala villagers related to a fresh water soft shell turtle made the forest officials and the local administration  to take possession of the turtle due to large scale of protest. Finally, the officials returned with empty hand on Wednesday as the orthodoxical god fearing people refused to hand over the turtle to the forest officials .

“We tried to convince the villagers since last one week not to keep the endangered turtle with them and advised them to hand over the turtle to forest department for releasing it  on nearby river . But the villagers refused to hand over the turtles to the forest officials for which we filed case against the priest under the provisions of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, said Patnaik.

Notably, on Wednesday ,the Ranger of Mahakalapada forest Range, Mihir Pattnaik, the Executive officer of Pattamundai NAC,Basant Kumar Pal, and a police team went to Batu Baba’s muth  in Khadipala village   under Pattamundai police station, where the endangered fresh water Soft Shell turtle was kept and worshipped by the locals and the adjoining villagers , in order to take possession of the turtle and to release the endangered species at the nearby river  .But , about 400 people ,including more than 250 women , protested the move of the forest officials and denied to hand over the turtle at any cost as the villagers believing that   the turtle is the incarnation of God following two black spot on its carapaces  resembles to the eye of the Lord Jagannath .

“We have asked the villagers to hand it over as it is illegal to confine a turtle, but they are refusing by saying that Lord Jagannath has visited to our village in the form of a turtle. They are  not allowing anybody to take the turtle away from them .”,added the Ranger of Mahakalapada Forest Range , Mihir Patnaik.

Police excess : Old man beaten to death

In the latest incident of police excesses, a sixty-five-year old man was allegedly beaten to death on last night  in remote Ratanpur village under Gogua GP in Mahakalpada police station area under Kendrapara district .Tension has mounted up the village and adjoining areas as Mahakalapada tehsildar, Arta Trana Lenka, SDPO of Kendrapara, Sarat Kumar Sahu, and the IIC of Marshaghai including a platoon of armed police  have rushed to the spot to diffuse the situation.

According to villagers ,a team of policemen led by in-charge of Mahakalapada police station ,Madan Mohan Pradhan,on last night came to Ratanpur village and  allegedly broke the door  of  the house owner- Bhaskar Das while looking out for his son- Bharat Das- in connection with a warrant pending since over 25 years . The victim allegedly died on the spot as a portion of the door allegedly fell on the oldman while he was taking rest in the house and the khaki clad personnel led by Pradhan entered forcibly into the house in search of Bharat Das by trampling the deceased with boots ..

Notably, an arrest warrant was pending against Bharat Das since twenty five years on the charges of damaging coconut saplings by allowing his buffalos to graze on the land of forest department in the village

Police later  arrested Bharat and left the place leaving injured father unattended, according to complaint lodged by deceased’s daughter-in-law Abanti Das before the SDPO of Kendrapara Sarat Kumar Sahu.

After the death of Bhaskar Das , large numbers of villagers attacked the policemen and damaged their jeep on Wednesday night  while they were conducting another raid at Babar market. The Khaki clad personnel on last night fled from the spot to cover themselves from the wrath of the locals by leaving the jeep.The villagers later punctured the tyre of the police jeep  A platoon of police and some senior police officials rushed to the village and rescued the police jeep from the clutches of the agitated villagers. On Thursday large numbers of villagers staged agitation in front of the deceased’s house  by keeping the dead body of Bhaskar Das on the village road and demanded immediate arrest of the policemen who killed the oldman and to provide Rs 2 lakh to the deceased’s family member.

“The allegation is grave in nature. It is being thoroughly investigated”, said Kendrapara Sub divisional police officer, Sarat Kumar Sahu.

The agitated villagers have sought for Rs 2 lakh compensation to the bereaved family and prevented the police from taking custody of the body for post mortem. Till the last report came the bereaved family members and the villagers have not handed over the body to the police for autopsy.
